Interstate, Storm

Lately I’ve been driving more on the interstate.  Yesterday, probably because of the late winter storm, the transportation department had posted a message on the large overhead electronic signs that fits in with these tidbits.  (And it helps when someone else gives me a good idea.)

Leave sooner
Drive slower
Live longer

Not every accident is fatal, but the same concept applies.  Even a small accident would probably result in being late for or completely missing an event.  And it’s my philosophy that in the long run, it costs less to…

I try to post these tidbits online every Tuesday.  Occasionally I don’t get it written until late in the day and I’m credited with a Wednesday posting.  I do know that tomorrow I’ll be busier than usual, so I’m writing this one early.  I’m going to use a scheduling feature so I can write it Monday, and then schedule it to be posted on Tuesday.  It will help me immensely with my schedule tomorrow.

Here’s the safety tie-in.  There are lots of safety features available for us.  Be it seatbelts, safety shoes, or child-proof caps on medications, they are only beneficial if we use them.  So here’s my challenge to you readers.  Since I’m using the “schedule publishing” feature, take a minute and find a safety feature that you can use to help you…

gas mask, Military, training

I spent over 20 years in the military.  One constant during all that time was the training, and no other training stands out for me like the gas mask training (chemical warfare training was the more official term).  Even though the masks and equipment changed over the years, the training always followed these basic principles:  keep your gear in good condition, know how it works, and be able put it on quick.   Fortunately, I never used my gas mask in a real world situation, but having the training gave me the confidence that I needed.

Anyone can apply the same concept to about any process or procedure.  The bottom line is, when it comes to safety, the more you know, the better you are trained, the easier handle problems if they arise.  Perhaps you will never use what you learn, but training and knowledge will help you to …

ability, expertise, Homework

My son was working on his math homework over the weekend, and I could tell that he needed some help on a couple of problems.  The first one wasn’t too bad, but the second problem had me scratching my head.  Before I offered a suggestion, I reminded my son that it had been a long time (decades) since I’d taken a math class.  I told him how I thought he could solve it, and as he looked at it he realized what he needed to do.

Here’s the safety tie-in.  Everyone has an area of skill or expertise.  It may be safety, math, music, cooking, sitcoms, reality TV, or any number of things.  When it comes to safety, my opinion is to always offer help, but don’t be afraid to speak up if you are in a situation beyond your abilities.  A few moments to talk, explain, or evaluate may be the time it takes to…

Apologize, audiobooks, Bluetooth, parking, Seat belts

If you see me get into my car, and you decide to wait for my parking space, please be advised that you may be waiting for a while.  First and foremost, I always put on my seat belt.  Second, depending on when it is, I usually take a few minutes to get things set up.  If I’m calling my mother, I put my Bluetooth in place and dial her number before pulling away.  If I’m driving alone, I take a few moments to get my audiobook playing.  If you are waiting for me, I apologize for making you wait.  But please understand that I never apologize for taking time to…
