Accidents, Culture of Safety, Decisions

Outside the breakroom at work, there’s a sign that reads, “Safety Is No Accident!”  When I read that sign, I think of two ways the phrase “no accident” can be interpreted.  The first is to have an absence of unintentional events that cause harm or damage.  The second is that “no accident” indicates that there was planning and a definite effort that results in a safe environment.  While it’s a given that planning and efforts contribute to accident-free results, I propose that there’s another dimension to this concept, which I’ll call a culture of safety.  Think of it this way.  When we believe and embrace the concept that safe actions are not just a program but a way of life, when we base in our decisions on how safe we’ll be (and not just how fast we can get it done), when we want not only ourselves but also our coworkers to return home in the same condition we came to work in, then we will truly…

Forklift, Hay, Horse

I live in what I’ll call a “mixed use” neighborhood, which includes small pastures and some horses.  Recently, while walking the dog, I heard a soft, low neigh from a horse.  I turned to see a horse against a fence.  Just this side of the fence were a few bales of hay.  I quickly realized the horse was hoping I’d feed him.  It may have been convenient (to the horse) for me to throw it a few handfuls of hay, and it probably would have done no harm, but it wasn’t my horse and I was not going to take a chance.

Here’s the safety tie-in.  You may encounter situations where someone asks you to something unsafe.  It happened to me once when a coworker wanted me to use a forklift as an oversized stepstool.  Since I didn’t oblige my coworker, I’ll never know if the outcome would have been good or bad.  I do know that if I’d done that once, it would have been easier to do it again.  I firmly believe that it’s better to never start a questionable activity, and to always stick with the rules of safety.  That way, you and I will always …

One weekend morning several months ago, I ran outside to get my newspaper.  Later, the family took off to run errands and we were gone for about an hour.  When we got home, I realized that I’d left the front door unlocked.  I think that’s the only time that’s happened since I make it a habit to check the door before leaving the house.  Luckily, nothing went wrong while we were away.

Here’s the safety tie-in.  Sometimes we may forget a part of our PPE, we may unintentionally go a little faster than planned while driving, or there might be another little oversight that leaves us vulnerable.  That’s part of human nature.  Hopefully when that happens, nothing will go wrong.  But the more we make it a habit to do safe things, the less we leave to chance that we will…

Multitasking, Overtime, Super Bowl 51, Super Bowl LI

Like so many of you, I watched Super Bowl LI over the weekend.  It was a great game, with several firsts – first Super Bowl to go into overtime, among others.  The problem was that I needed that time to write my tidbit.  I knew that Monday morning wouldn’t allow me the time to write, and the time passes too quickly in the evening for me to get it done.

Here’s the safety tie-in.  We as human being, despite what society says, can only multitask to a limited extent.  I wasn’t able to focus on the game (and the ads) and write.  I chose to focus on watching the game, and find another time when I could write this tidbit.  We need to make sure that in all our activities, we stay focused on that activity and not get distracted.  After all, it’s these little things that help us…
