inThis weekend we celebrate Memorial Day. I want all of you to enjoy your celebrations. I also want everyone to resume a normal life after the holiday. With that in mind, make these two rules part of your celebration preparation.
#1 – If you plan to drink, don’t drive.
#2 – If you plan to drive, don’t drink.
It’s that simple. It’s that absolute. It’s one of the little things you can do that will help you …

One day recently I needed to carry some couch cushions downstairs. As I stood at the top of the stairs, I felt my center of balance had moved to where it leaned in favor of the stairs. I took a moment to evaluate my options. I could throw the cushions down. But I’d tried that before, and the results weren’t good. I could carry the cushions down one at a time, but that seemed a little excessive. I decided to turn around and go down the stairs backwards, allowing me to drag the cushions if needed.

I was driving the 40 MPH speed limit, plus a little, so I was surprised when the other driver decided to pass me. There wasn’t any oncoming traffic, and the other driver executed the pass safely – with the exception of exceeding the speed limit. I followed the other car for about a mile, when the driver turned off the road. I calculated that, by passing me, the other driver saved 20 seconds at the most.
There are so many factors to consider when passing another vehicle, which for me, always makes passing stressful. In this situation, I think I would have slowed down a bit and accepted that I’d be looking at another bumper/tailgate/trunk for a few minutes. It may have taken me a minute longer, and I may have not enjoyed looking at the other car, but I would …

I forget where I found this (maybe in a fantasy book, I think), but the concept is sound and can be applied in many circumstances. “We will take care. It is the enemy you underestimate who kills you.” In the story, they were preparing for battle. But each of us can use the same concept in our daily lives. Be aware of what is happening around you, know and understand the equipment you use, and give others enough room so that you and they will …
