Bumper sticker, seatbelt

Once I saw a bumper sticker that read, “Buckle up.  I wanna try something.”  I hope that was intended to be tongue in cheek, but it is a good reminder.  You can never be sure what the other driver is going to do, and wearing your seatbelt keeps you in a safe place if there is an accident.  I think that if it were just you and me, we’d be okay.  But we always need to consider the other guy as we prepare.  That way we can …

Pedestrian accident

Last week, after picking up a prescription, I was leaving the pharmacy when I saw a fellow sitting on the side of the parking lot.  Literally, he was on the pavement, a large pickup truck parked just a few inches away, and several people were gathered around to help.  I could tell that a minor accident had just happened.  The driver may have been distracted or possibly had miscalculated the pedestrian’s actions.  The paramedics and police were arriving as I was leaving.  I may be wrong, but if the driver had been in a rush, I bet now he wishes he’d taken time to …

Accidents, Fatalities, Freeway, Traffic

Recently I’ve been driving on the freeway more than usual.  I’ve noticed the state transportation department has been periodically posting the number of fatalities on the state’s highways for the year.  I noticed an increase in their casualty count over the last few days.  I’ve also seen a sign that says, “Zero fatalities – the only acceptable goal.”

Have you ever stopped to consider the costs of a traffic accident?  Even without injuries (fatal or not) there’s the damage to the vehicles, the response by law enforcement, and oftentimes, there’s a traffic backup after an accident.  If there is a fatality, there’s going to be funeral expenses and emotional costs at the least.  I think that, while driving, there are countless reasons to …

notes, Preparation

Over the weekend, I wanted to take some notes.  Because this project paralleled others, I wanted to use a “mini legal pad” for consistency.  I also knew I would be taking several pages of notes.  Early into the project, I realized I was almost out of paper.  I tried, but couldn’t find more mini note pads.  In the end, I had to settle for a full-sized legal pad to finish my notes.

Taking notes isn’t a life-or-death activity, but the safety tie-in for this tidbit is preparation.  I do know that the more hazardous the activity, the more time we need to invest in preparation.  Whether it’s a few seconds to strap on the seatbelt, or a few minutes to check PPE, taking time to prepare can help us…
