4th of July, Independence Day

This weekend is the 4th of July – Independence Day.  Much of our celebrating will involve parades, picnics, fireworks, and possibly a beer or two.  There are too many topics to cover in this small blog, but I will emphasize these two points.  First, prepare to incorporate safety in all your activities.  Be it sun screen or life jackets, plan to have it and plan to use it.  Second, closely related to the first, is this.   If you plan to drink, don’t drive.  If you plan to drive, don’t drink.  I know that for me and my family, I don’t want to wake up on July 5th and be a statistic reported in the newspaper.  I’d rather take the time and effort to…

Safety mindset

This morning I was at a loss for something to write about in my tidbit.  Just as I asked for my family’s input, my wife was standing at the fridge and something fell on her foot.  After she let out a mild, “Auuuugggh!” she said that I could base it on things falling out of the fridge.  Apparently, someone had stored a plastic bowl and considered the task complete.  But that person hadn’t thought ahead and evaluated what could happen when the container was moved.

Thinking ahead, considering future possibilities and planning for them (even with the plastic bowls in the fridge) is part of a safety mindset.  It’s just one small part of what will help us truly…

Father’s Day, Race the train, Rural Idaho

Since this weekend is Father’s Day, I’m going to share a memory of my father from my youth.  Growing up in rural Idaho, we’d often see freight trains passing through the countryside.  I remember once seeing a train and saying to my dad, “Race the train, Daddy!  Race the train!”  (Freight trains are rarely short, so I must have been past the age where counting the cars was exciting.)  I remember Dad’s response had some wisdom.  He said in effect, “It’d be great if we won, and I’d be okay if we lose, but I don’t want a tie.”
My dad was a good, hard working man, and he had his faults like any man.  But I do know that when it came to his kids, he wanted us to…

crosswarlk

My memory stinks.  I’ll oftentimes add a reminder in my smartphone when I have an idea for a tidbit.  Once about a year ago, I had an idea just as I was about to cross a busy intersection.  As I was busy with my thumb-typing, the crosswalk light changed – and I missed it.  Maybe I could have made it across the street before the light changed, but I decided to wait and pay closer attention.  When I was able to cross the street, I realized it had only taken me an extra minute to…
