Double-check, Smartphone app, Tidbit

Last week I used the app on my smartphone to write my tidbit.  I drafted it, reviewed it and put it online.  I did all the essential tasks…but one.  I didn’t hit the Publish link.  I didn’t realize this until the next day when I checked to make sure everything looked good.  Luckily, I was able to fix the oversight and get it posted.  I’m glad that I checked it, even if I should have done it sooner.

The tie-in is simple.  Whenever possible, take a moment to check your work/procedures/systems, especially if something out of the ordinary happens.  Just a quick moment to check things can help you and me …

I’m going to a forklift training class later this week. My past experience with a forklift gives me an optimistic hope that I’ll pass the class. My biggest concern is remembering to keep the forks low and that a forklift moves differently than a car. I doubt I’d injure myself, but I really want to make sure that everyone around me will …Be Safe!

DPDT switch, Obsessive-compulsive, stairs

An electrician once said I was obsessive-compulsive because I think a light switch should be down when the light is off — even for lights with two switches (a double-pole double-throw, or a DPDT switch).  I think I’m old fashioned, not obsessive-compulsive.  As I remember it, when I was growing up all our light switches were simply “up is on and down is off.”  I can’t be too obsessed with this because, having lived in our house for several years, I have seven DPDT switches that I haven’t changed.  I will admit that I’ll sometimes walk through an unlighted room so the switches are configured to my preference — with one exception.  I always turn the lights on before I go down the stairs, regardless of the light switch being up or down.  It’s another small thing that helps me …

Double-check, watch traffic

Once I heard an acquaintance tell about an experience she had while driving.  She was at a T-intersection, waiting for traffic to clear, looking left and right to watch for a break in the traffic.  A car in the parking lot across the road signaled for her to proceed, and she did.  As she pulled away, she saw another car coming.  She cleared the intersection in time, but she realized that after the other driver had signaled for her to proceed, she also should have looked one last time to…

Garage

Today I had some work to do in my garage.  The project was in a narrow space by the wall, and I was constantly working my way on and off the garage floor.  Knowing that I could easily fall, I stopped and looked over the situation.  I decided to pull my car out of the garage and move things around to give me more space.  That accomplished several things.  I had more room to move, I had easier access to my tools, better lighting, I got done faster, and it helped me to …
