Last week I took a class and became an OSHA certified forklift operator. It was a comparatively short class, but it gave me the basics so I can operate certain types of forklift in the industrial environment. It doesn’t mean I’m a highly skilled forklift operator, but I’ve had the basic training and I know what I need to do to properly operate this piece of equipment. I spent over 20 years in the military. One constant during all that time was the training, and no other training stands out for me like the gas mask training (chemical warfare training was the more official term). Even though the masks and equipment changed over the years, the training always followed these basic principles: keep your gear in good condition, know how it works, and be able put it on quick. Fortunately, I never used my gas mask in a real world situation, but having the training gave me the confidence that I needed.
Anyone can apply the same concept to about any process or procedure. The bottom line is, when it comes to safety, the more you know, the better you are trained, the easier handle problems if they arise. Perhaps you will never use what you learn, but training and knowledge will help you to …
