I need to leave early today so I can go home and take a nap. I know you probably don’t care, but I have many reasons. The side effects of some of my medications read, “may cause drowsiness” and “may disrupt sleep cycle.” Since I woke up too early this morning, since tonight is very busy, since I’ll get to bed later than usual, and since I’m driving tonight, I’m leaving early today. Maybe it’s because I don’t want to be a headline on tomorrow’s newspaper. Or maybe it’s just that I do try to…

Since the kids were out of school yesterday, we drove about half an hour down the freeway o do some shopping. Before leaving, I asked my daughter to take notes of any unsafe driving that we saw. She noted a few things that were outstanding (tailgating, talking/texting while driving, and straddling two lanes) both on and off the freeway.

Perhaps the biggest hazard was also handled most safely. Near home, an oncoming truck crossed into our lane while turning into a construction area. He needed the space, did it the safest way he could, and I slowed to allow him the time and space he needed.

My son and his friend recently had a homework project that required them to record a video with background music. Since they are teenagers, it somehow evolved to where they were taking turns jumping over a couch and landing on pillows in front of the camera. They did this about 20 times without any problem. Finally their luck ran out, they got the timing wrong and knocked the iPod off the boom box. (Please be aware this wasn’t as dangerous as it may sound, and they learned a lesson.)

There are some activities we can change that are risky. For example, long ago I stopped standing on a chair to change the smoke alarm batteries. Now I always use a small step ladder. Just because I hadn’t fallen didn’t mean my luck would keep. And I don’t want to rely on my luck to …

This morning when I tried calling a coworker, I got her voice mail. Only the greeting I received was for another fellow. I’m not certain, but the message may be from a “previous” owner of that phone number.

That gives me a great tie-in to safety. Do you have the most current information you need to be safe? Do you give out the most current information? Do you know where to find the current information you need? Considering how fast things can change (just ask the Seattle Seahawks), it is essential to have accurate and current information so you can…
