Forklift

I work near a receiving warehouse with forklifts zipping around all day long.  I always pay attention when I walk through the warehouse for obvious reasons.  I remember one day as I passed a forklift, the operator and I politely made eye contact, acknowledging each other.  At the same time, I also remember hearing another forklift sounding a horn.  It took me a moment before I saw the other forklift about 20 yards away.  I don’t know if he was honking specifically for me, but I appreciate his efforts to…

Forklift, Hay, Horse

I live in what I’ll call a “mixed use” neighborhood, which includes small pastures and some horses.  Recently, while walking the dog, I heard a soft, low neigh from a horse.  I turned to see a horse against a fence.  Just this side of the fence were a few bales of hay.  I quickly realized the horse was hoping I’d feed him.  It may have been convenient (to the horse) for me to throw it a few handfuls of hay, and it probably would have done no harm, but it wasn’t my horse and I was not going to take a chance.

Here’s the safety tie-in.  You may encounter situations where someone asks you to something unsafe.  It happened to me once when a coworker wanted me to use a forklift as an oversized stepstool.  Since I didn’t oblige my coworker, I’ll never know if the outcome would have been good or bad.  I do know that if I’d done that once, it would have been easier to do it again.  I firmly believe that it’s better to never start a questionable activity, and to always stick with the rules of safety.  That way, you and I will always …

Forklift, Responsibility, training

Last week I took a class and became an OSHA certified forklift operator.  It was a comparatively short class, but it gave me the basics so I can operate certain types of forklift in the industrial environment.  It doesn’t mean I’m a highly skilled forklift operator, but I’ve had the basic training and I know what I need to do to properly operate this piece of equipment.  It’s still up to me to remember what I’ve learned and to use it.  It’s always my responsibility to …

Forklift, learning

I’m being train to operate a forklift.  The few times I’ve used this vehicle, I’ve used great caution, always looking around me, and taking things very slow – especially when I’m lifting or lowering a load.  Since I’m just learning, beginning to get familiar with how the forklift works, I need extra time to learn the differences between the forklift and other vehicles.  It may take me a little longer, but as I learn, I want to learn how to …

Forklift

I was recently in a warehouse, passing an area where a forklift was moving large boxes.  The driver stopped his work so I could safely pass.  I could have walked in front of the forklift, but the walkway was narrow and I would have needed to step over the forks.  Even though there was a little less room, I walked behind the forklift.  I think I’d seen a sign before warning to avoid the forks, so I did.  It was a small inconvenience, but by doing it, I knew I would …
