Habits, Ice, slips, trips and falls, winter safety

One morning last winter, I was getting out of my car before work.  I’ve been driving for decades, so this was very much a habit.  As I put my weight on my left foot, it went shooting out from under me and I somehow managed to catch myself between the car door and the car seat.  The only thing that got hurt was my pride.  As I think back, there wasn’t any new snow that morning, but there had been enough time for the snow to get packed, to thaw just enough and freeze so that there was ice on the pavement.  I couldn’t help but thing about how trips, slips and falls are one of the largest causes of accidents, and I was almost another statistic.

There have been a couple of snowstorms where I live, and since winter is just starting, I’m sure there will be more.  That means more ice, that I’ll need to be aware of my surroundings, and I’ll have to change my habits so I can…

I try to write this blog every Tuesday. I thought about it early this morning, but I couldn’t think of what to say. I had an idea to write about the SUV resting on its side in the farmer’s field, but I don’t know how it got there and I didn’t have time to stop and ask the sheriff. Since then, I’ve been running errands, battling traffic and a snowstorm. My best chance to start writing is while waiting for my family during an appointment. On top of that, I’m “thumb typing” with my smart phone so I can use the app to get it posted. It’s going slow, but I’m doing my best.
To one degree or another, we all have a responsibility for safety, and sometimes it is easier than others. Still, despite the challenges, distractions and any inconveniences, we need to do all we can to …

Once last year, there was road construction on my way to work.  Apparently, not everyone had allowed the extra time they need due to the delays.  I was driving smoothly along, moving into an area where the speed limit decreased, when another driver past me.  I remember wondering, “If I’m driving at the speed limit, just how fast is that other driver going?”  I glanced down at my speedometer and realized that if it were just me and a cop car on the road, I could have been cited for excessive speed.

Here’s the safety tie-in.  All too often we “go with the flow,” thinking all is well, until we see “that other guy” doing something clearly unsafe.  Sometimes it’s a challenge, but I honestly try to use my own standards and not rely on the crowd to help me …

auto accident, Failure to Yield

Last month I made a mistake. Early one morning I was driving through the countryside near my home when I pulled up to a stop sign. If my memory is accurate, I waited until a vehicle approaching from my right passed through the intersection before proceeding. I was about halfway across the road when I realized there was a vehicle approaching from my left. This occurred to me as that vehicle hit my car. I received a ticket for failure to yield. Since I still have to appear in court, I can’t say exactly what lessons I’ll learn. (Or is that “le$$on$”?) Next month, after my day in court, I’ll write more details about the accident and what happened. In the mean time, I’m taking extra effort when I drive to …

Pedestrian safety, school kids

Yesterday morning as I was leaving home, some school kids were walking to the bus stop, and a few kids were walking in my traffic lane with their backs toward me.  Keep in mind this was half an hour before sunrise.  Fortunately I was driving carefully and I saw them in my headlights.  Later, I asked my daughter what she remembers about pedestrian safety and learned she knows the safe way to walk on the street, but she also has seen that other kids have bad habits as they walk on the road.  I hope the local kids can change their habits before there is an accident.

Please take a minute to remind your loved ones of the basics of pedestrian safety (walk on the shoulder, facing oncoming traffic), and encourage them to use what they learn.  Hopefully if we set a good example, others will break their bad habits and learn to …
