Blankets, Cool weather, Preparing for winter, September, Snacks

My mother would say, “My, is it September already?” School has started, we’ve celebrated Labor Day, and the weather is starting to cool off. One of the projects I need to do soon is arrange for my annual service for my furnace. I’ll also want to make sure all my cars are winter-ready. We always keep some blankets in the car, and my wife will want to make sure we have some good snacks in the car. I know it seems like summer isn’t completely over, but yes, it’s time to start preparing for winter. Besides, it’s never too early to start planning to …

I’m currently reading a book that connects success and thought processes, emphasizing learning and our attitude towards it. Without delving into the psychology of the book, I see a strong correlation between the successes defined in the book and our perception of safety. One frame of mind is, “I don’t have any accidents, so I must be safe.” The other is, “It’s a challenging world out there. How can I be safer?” In writing these tidbits, I try to encourage the second mindset. While being and behaving safely is critical, it is also vital that we continue to learn and integrate new safety standards in our activities. We always need to continue learning how to…

Recently, I was riding on the freeway with my teenage son.  Usually, I’d drive, but this time my son drove because I was taking a strong pain killer.  As we travelled, I was impressed with how safely my son was driving.  Most of all, I was impressed with the distance he kept between him and the car ahead of him, which was usually five seconds or more.  I don’t know if my son learned this from my example, or if he learned in his driver’s training.  Regardless, I’m glad my son is learning to …

I hope everyone had a memorable and safe Memorial Day weekend. I did, visiting some historical displays, taking a ride with my son, and roasting hotdogs with my family in the evening. However, I know of one family where the memories will be difficult. I read an article online where a young man was riding an UTV when he crashed, resulting in fatal injuries. The phrase from the article, “he took a corner too fast…” stands out for me.

Did he not know the area? Did he not concentrate? Could someone have said a word of caution to him? I don’t know how many other similar injuries happened over the holiday weekend, but one is too many. As the summer continues, I hope everyone will take extra precautions to …

101 Days of Summer, Broken record, Memorial Day

Memorial Day is only four weeks away – the traditional beginning of summer. And I’m feeling like a broken record. Just think about it. Each year we are reminded of the change in weather, the summer activities, to be cautious when we’re recreating, and the need for caution in holiday traffic. The 101 critical days of summer. “Be careful because we want to see you back at work.” Sound familiar?

Let’s “flip this around.” How would you feel if you cut your hand while daydreaming about a swimming party? Or if you were in the hospital because you lost control while driving too fast in the mountains? Or worse, how would you feel if someone else was injured while you were driving because you “just had to post to Facebook” about your fishing trip? Is it worth it? To me, any one of those sounds like an excellent reason to …

Dog, habit, Shower, Trainning

Earlier this year, my son’s small dog got into the shower right after a shower. I don’t know why, but he found some pleasure in licking the wet shower floor. That’s one habit we didn’t want him to develop. He didn’t like it when we didn’t let him back in. For a few weeks after, he’d stand outside the shower door with that “puppy dog look,” as if he were saying, “But Keith, I’ve done it before!” It was all a matter of training, and now he ignores the shower.

There are good and bad habits, and we can learn good habits, and work to break bad habits.  I recommend everyone take time to think about your habits, and break any habit that presents danger to you and others.  It may be smoking in bed, weaving through freeway traffic, or bypassing safety measures at work.  Just take some time, ask for help if needed, and take time to…

Freeway, Snowstorm

Last week, I had an appointment about 50 minutes away.  Usually, I leave an hour before the appointment, zip down the freeway, and arrive in time to park with a few minutes to spare.  Usually there isn’t a snowstorm.  Luckily, I left 30 minutes early.  That gave me time to drive carefully, time to …

Forklift

I work near a receiving warehouse with forklifts zipping around all day long.  I always pay attention when I walk through the warehouse for obvious reasons.  I remember one day as I passed a forklift, the operator and I politely made eye contact, acknowledging each other.  At the same time, I also remember hearing another forklift sounding a horn.  It took me a moment before I saw the other forklift about 20 yards away.  I don’t know if he was honking specifically for me, but I appreciate his efforts to…

Recently I was walking through a parking lot, after a snowstorm, when I came to a section where the snow hadn’t been cleared away. I stopped, looked at the path ahead of me, and focused on where the snow wasn’t too deep. After a few yards of walking through the shallow snow, I again needed to stop and evaluate the best way to climb a small slope. I ended up taking a little longer path (maybe five yards out of my way) to where the slope wasn’t as steep, where I’d have better traction. And I reached my destination without incident.

Sorry, no tales of bruised behinds or broken bones. Of course the winter is just starting, so I may have more chances to slip and fall. But my chances of injury are reduced when I stop, look things over, and take the time to…

I picked up my snow blower on my way home from work the other day. I dropped it off for servicing several days before, knowing  the weather would turn cold. I want to make sure it works well before the winter storms come. That’s one thing I need to do before winter comes in full force. After all, preparation is vital for my family and me to…
