Ice, windshields, winter driving

One winter evening many years ago, when I was in college, I was taking a date to a movie. As we were walking across a street on our way to the theater, I remember hearing a car approaching from behind. I instinctively put my arm in front of my date to keep her from walking any further.  Then, just feet in front of us, a small car passed as it turned the corner. I remember as the car passed, that the window was frosted over, except for a small peephole maybe six inches across. I always had the feeling that if I hadn’t stopped my date, we could have spent our date at the local hospital instead of the theater.

Winter is coming and, depending on your climate, you may soon need to start scraping ice off your windshield. Always take time to scrape your entire windshield. It only takes a few minutes to …

Distractions, driving, mistakes, rationalizing

This morning I asked my wife for a suggestion for my tidbit. Here’s our conversation.
“What about that stop sign you ran the other day?” She asked.
“I try to use other people’s examples, not mine.” I answered. “Besides, I could see that there wasn’t any traffic coming, and I was going slow, so I didn’t do anything unsafe. It was just illegal.”
“I’d like to see you work that up into a tidbit,” She challenged.
I’m rationalizing. The truth is that we had just left our house and I wanted to get around a corner, pull over and check my smart phone map for our destination. I had a few too many things on my mind, but with our conversation and the stress of the situation, I only did two of the three things right.
1) I was going at a safe speed,
2) I checked for oncoming traffic,
3) I was distracted and I didn’t stop.
I admit that I’m not perfect, that I do make mistakes. But I try to learn from my mistakes and use those experiences so that in the future I will…

This morning I wanted to connect a data stick to my car stereo so I could listen to something other than the radio while taking my daughter to school.  It took me a minute of fumbling to get it connected.  As I started the car, my daughter said quietly, “Don’t forget the garage door.”  I’m glad she did.  I’d been so focused on setting up the stereo that I’d forgotten about the garage door.  I probably would have opened it since it’s my habit to use the mirrors whenever backing up.

I’ve said it before, but it’s one of the messages that’s worth repeating.  Always take the time to help others …

When I was young, the newspaper reported that my home town fire department was getting a new fire engine. As part of a safety trend back then, they decided to get this new fire truck in fluorescent green instead of the traditional red. They thought the new color would be easier to see, thus helping with community safety. Sometime later (months or years, I can’t remember) they said they were doing away with the new paint scheme because people didn’t think “fire engine” unless the fire engine was red. I’ll admit that as I think about it today, if I saw green and flashing lights, I’d have to stop and think things through.

Sometimes there is time to make changes safely with education. In other situations, (especially if the public is involved) we need to consider how others react during a split-second reaction and if there is still time to…

Autopilot, Finger, Habits, Rings

I recently saw a presentation about using gestures in public speaking.  As I listened, I noticed the presenter was missing a finger on his left hand, where his wedding band would have been.  After the meeting, I had a chance to talk to John (not his real name), and this is what I learned.
Years ago, John had a job where he’d remove his wedding band as a safety precaution.  It was his habit to not wear his ring at work.  One year, during the Christmas holidays, he decided to wear his wedding band for a few days.  Unfortunately, he failed to remove his ring after the holidays, and he lost his finger in a work accident.
We are creatures of habit.  (My wife made the comparison to autopilot.)  Sometimes those habits will change, either out of necessity or choice. I think this week I’ll make a suggestion.  Take some time and review your habits.  Look specifically for changes you can make that will help you …

There was a time when I had to use a smart card (with an imbedded chip) and enter a password in order to use the computers at work.  As part of the network security, there were limits on how many times I could enter the wrong password before the card would be “locked” and I’d have to jump through bureaucratic hoops before I could use a computer again.  Since I’ve got many passwords, a bad memory and some paralysis in my right hand, I was prone to fat-fingering my password.  One day I saw a warning that I was only two more wrong entries before I’d be locked out.  After that, I always took it slow and somehow went about three weeks or more without another warning.

Here’s the safety tie-in.  When we know that something could go wrong, we take extra precautions to reduce the chance for accidents.  Unfortunately, we don’t always have that warning – or sometimes ignore them.  That’s why we should always be prepared for something to go wrong.  We need to always take the time necessary to…

Last night I visited a manufacturing plant with a reserved parking spot for “safety employee of the month.” I asked a plant employees about that benefit, and learned this. The safety parking spot is for an employee who performs a “safety act.” (Sorry, that’s the best phrase I can think of.) This act is more than wiping up a wet spot. To earn that parking space, the employee needs to identify a problem, document and implement the solution, and communicate the information to the appropriate office.

The more I think about this, the more genius I see in the program. It creates a culture where following procedures is encouraged, where communication is strengthened, and gives employees an incentive to…

Earlier this summer, I almost saw an accident while standing near a busy six-lane intersection.  I was watching traffic when I saw (and heard) a sports sedan pass by.  I think it may have been going a little too fast, hoping to beat a red light.  Just as that car passed through the intersection, another car pulled out from a parking lot and, instead of turning into the nearest lane, it pulled into the middle lane where the sedan was speeding along.  Fortunately, a split second before impact, the sedan swerved and missed the second car.  Was the second driver watching the traffic lights and not the traffic?  Had there been an accident, I wonder who would have been cited?  From my perspective, both drivers could have been more cautious.

We never know when someone else will make a mistake or use poor judgment.  That’s even more reason to always try to…

changes, Laptop, stairs

On day at home I was using my laptop when I decided I wanted to use it downstairs. I made sure I had a good hold on my computer and carefully walked down the stairs. By the time I reached the bottom of the stairs, I thought it would have been better if I had closed the laptop since I didn’t save much time by leaving it open and running. I also decided that, in the future, I’ll take the time do what would have been safer in the first place.

Part of any good safety practice is to recognize when something could go wrong and take steps so that something doesn’t happen the next time. It is when we can see potential problems and are willing to make the necessary changes that we will…

encourage, Safety

Here’s a short background on how this blog got started and why I write it.

I started writing these safety tidbits in 2012 for a handful of folks where I worked to remind them of safety duties and procedures. That gradually grew to where I was sending them to over 400 people at the agency where I worked, hoping to use a different perspective to encourage them to be more safety aware. Starting last January, I’ve been posting them on this blog.

In my writing, it has been my intent to encourage you, the reader, to think about safety in a different way, and to make small changes in your personal and professional activities to be safe. If I have made even a small difference, prevented even one accident, then I consider my efforts a success. Whether you’re a faithful reader or a one-time visitor, I hope you will always…
